It was a routine day. 21st July 1964, Mike and Joan with 25000 Malays went to Padang to join a Malay procession that marked Prophet Muhammad’s birthday. However, this massive celebration was ruined. All sorts of preparation had gone to waste as a riot broke out when a protest demonstration by Malays escalated from a verbal war of taunts and insults with Chinese bystanders. Mike and Joan whom were at the scene were being caught in the riot. Mike being a hot-headed person joined in the riots as he could no longer stands the racist remarks.

In the huge confusion of the riots, Mike and Joan were separated by the incoming waves of angry mobs. Joan was just like ant being trampled by elephants. She fell onto the ground, in a fanatic and confuse state, she stared into the eyes of everyone whose eyes were red with killings as she shielded herself with her own arms from attacks. Tears came rolling down her cheeks as she saw some bloody victims lay dead around her. She had not wished for bloods to be shed for this procession. Chaos was everywhere. Blood, body parts and even children were not spared in the bloodshed.

The sound of siren of the police car coming down the street corner sends shivers down the spine out of all the people participating in the riots outbreak. The crowd began to disperse as large batch of the military soldiers and police began to march towards them. Some rioters whom were so engrossed in engaging in fighting did not realize that they were being closing down. Most of the rioters ended up being caught by the soldiers and police. Mike was lucky to have got his way out of the crowd and hiding from getting caught. However, Joan whom was badly injured and stunned was caught by the soldiers and incarcerated. Mike whom was watching from a distance was blaming himself for separating from Joan and letting her get hurt and caught.

The guilty-ridden Mike wanted to get Joan out from the rest whom was being caught and brings her to a safe place to take care of her wounds. Mike followed the captivities and sneaked into them. The panic-stricken Joan was relief to be able to see Mike once again, waited for the security to be low and grab a chance to sneak Joan out with him.

Mike sent Joan to the hospital and found out that Joan had suffered internal injuries. Joan’s consciousness was fading away and her last wish was for Mike to live happily with no sense of guilt. Being unable to accept the fact, Mike was grieved and guilty for Joan’s injuries. He blamed himself for Joan’s death despite her wish for him to live happily and got into a state of mental illness. Eventually, he ended his life. This is the most sentimental moment where people detest seeing many innocent lives being taken away.
